Gal Gadot plays Wonder Woman in a new movie about the superheroine coming out in June 2017. In the trailer, her independence and strength as a woman overpowers her sexualized features usually depicted. Gal Gadot is herself a Wonder Woman, as she was elected Miss Israel in 2004 and served in the Israel Defence Forces, making her a model and a soldier.
Wonder Woman is an iconic model of justice, peace and equality, and at the same time a male fantasy.
It seems like there’s a new dimension to the character; the trailer is showing lots of ass kicking and darkness to the heroine. Even her costume has a darker side. Forget the red bustier and the blue knickers with stars scattered in a pop art style. The costume was reinterpreted in the style of Greek armour, but without changing its shape. It is now in metal, making it a more gladiatorial version of Wonder Woman.
Chris Pine, playing Steve Trevor, tells her in the clip, wanting to protect her when she is about to go fight and put her life in danger: “I can’t let you do this.” She then replies: “What I do is not up to you.”
